Cross-cultural Application Of Chinish In Chinese-English Translation

Language, an important means in communication, is always changeable andconstantly changing. The contact of different languages will cause their variations.The internationalization of the English language is followed by its indigenization,therefore different varieties of English came into being in different regions, some ofwhich have been accepted and have played an important role in internationalcommunication. The indigenization of English in China has evolved into a specialvariety—Chinish, which is the combination of Chinese culture and the Englishlanguage itself.Chinish is an English variety used by the native-Chinese people forcommunication under the specific language environment. From the historical view,Chinish has experienced three stages: Pidgin English—Chinglish—Chinish (alsocalled China English), in which Chinish is a well-developed stage. According to thetheory of the second language acquisition, Chinish is also under the influences ofpositive and negative transfers of the speaker's mother tongue. Learning English as aforeign language will unavoidably experience a process, which is from the lower levelto the advanced level where Chinish exists. As a result, Chinish has been attachedgreat importance by the linguists all over the world, as it is a performance Englishvariety which is spoken by the largest number of people.There have been every nowand then the explorations of this topic, some focusing on theoretical differentiations ofChinish and Chinglish, others on the application of language itself. Therefore, in thispaper, the author analyzes both of the two aspects. The present paper consists ofintroduction, three chapters and a conclusion. In the introduction part, the authortraces the international and national factors that have given rise to Chinish and finallyaffirms its objective existence. ChapterⅡgives a definition of Chinish and its origin.Meanwhile, it also points out that Chinglish is an interlanguage during the process ofL2 acquisition. The author analyzes the differences between two terms, concerningthe factors that influence their formations from the point of the second languageacquisition. ChapterⅢdescribes and analyzes the linguistic characteristics of Chinishshown at the levels of phonology, lexis, syntax and discourse. ChapterⅣdiscussespractical application of the expressions of Chinish used in Chinese classical poemtranslation, Chinese idiom translation, Chinese food translation and Chinese newsreports. It is the main body of the thesis. In the conclusion, a summary is made of what is discussed above, we conclude that Chinish results from the combination ofChinese culture and the English language. Consquently, the study on Chinish is ofgreat significance to not only the wide spreading of Chinese culture and Chinesecivilization but also English teaching and learning in China.
