The Chronicle Of ZhangZhao

Beginning after the riegn of Qian Long and Jia Qing, the emperors of Song Dynasty, the study on stele inscription was highly advocated by Bao Shicheng and Kang Youwei later while the research about the school of handwriting models was rarely mentioned then. From the later period of Qing Dynasty through Ming Guo to the establishment of People's Republic of China, the study on the school of handwriting models aroused little attention and was discussed only when criticizing'Guan Ge Tie'. Now study about the school of handwriting models just formally starts, so people still do not pay much to Zhang Zhao, a famous calligrapher whose works could be representative of the handwriting in Qing Dynasty. His calligraphy clear reflects the changes of handwriting models during the time from the end of Kang Xi'rule to the beginning of Qiang Long's and was put in the place by Qing Long next to Wang Xi Zi. Undoubtedly, it is very meaningful to give a full study to such a figure and his works in enriching the research about calligraphy in Qing Dynasty and the school of handwriting models in the early age. What I am going to do is to lay a foundation for the future handwriting model and Zhang Zhao study by collecting in my thesis some data about Zhang Zhao'life,political career,trip stories,calligraphy,thought and the influence of this figure. The data collection consists of six parts.Part1. List Zhang Zhao'Chronicle by separating the relative data about him from plenty of the ancient documents which contain the following sorts:1. The works by Zhang Zhao including Tian Ping Zhai Shu Hua Ti Bao and The Collection of Te Tian Ju Shi.2. The historical documents of Qing Dynasty and the ones recorded by imperial courts such as Qing Shi Gao,Qing Shi Lu,Qiang Long Qi Qu Zhu etc.3. The calligraphy and paintings produced both by the people in the Qing Dynasty and nowdays like Shi Qu Bao Ji,Gu Yuan Cui Lu and The Catalogue of the Calligraphy and Paintings of Ancient China etc.4. The work and notes in Qing Dynasty and some unrecorded stories about the dynasty, for example Fang Bao Ji,The Collection of Teacher Dong Xin and Xin Shi Shuo.5. The logs of Ding Dynasty including The Log of Song Jiang Court,The Log of Lou County,The Log of Hua Ting County,The Log of Su Zhou Court and The Log of Ping Lu County.Based on these documents, a thorough and tight appraisal about his life and calligraphy was conducted, especially for the ten years from the beginning of Qian Long'reign to the death year of Zhang Zhao.Part 2 Aiming at the enrichment of the knowledge about Zhang Zhao's status in his time and promoting the further study abut him, pick up the important activities about Zhang Zhao into his chronicle such as Qiang Long'making notes on Zhang Zhao's calligraphy works within thirty-three years from the start of his reign and Qiang Long'ordering to carve Zhang Zhao's Tian Ping Zhai Fa Tie. Furthermore, the record about the edition by Zhang Zhao'descendants of The Notes on the Calligraphy and Paintings of Tian Ping Zhai and the Collection of Ti Tian Ju Shi are also absorbed into the chronicle.Part 3 Put Zhang Zhao'political events in his life into his chronicle, especially the relationship with three emperors , that is Kang Xi,Yong Zheng and Qian Long . These emperors attach great importance to Zhang Zhao, so the study about the relationship among them could help enrich the research about Zhang Zhao and the calligraphy in Guan Ge Ti style before Qing Dynasty.Part 4 Make a further appraisal to the relative data in order to ensure Zhang Zhao'chronicle correct. The concrete form of his chronicle consists of content and notes, with the content put in the line and notes written in the row offering reference for the content while appraising the content concerned further and making sure where they are from. The appraisal is going to be conducted through the combination of facts,contrast and reasoning in order to make it objective and exact. As for the disagreement and multiple resources for one event, the appraisal will be done more carefully and tightly and there is going to be a correction and explanation for every mistake in the chronicle. The unsure info will be kept for the future study.
