Chinese Classics Translation And Cultural Dissemination

In the past few decades, with the rising and popularity of cultural studies and the increasing of cultural exchanges between nations, more attention has been paid on the study on the essence of translation from cultural perspective. Interlingual translation can be construed more fundamentally as intercultural translation. Hence, a qualified translator should not only get a good command of the two languages but also have a good mastery of the two cultures' characteristics with more attention paid to the cultural differences in history, customs and habits, religion, etc.Numerous translators and theorists have attached great importance to the translation of Chinese classic works. Strange Tales from the Make-do Studio, a great literary works in ancient China, contains abundance of cultural messages and has greatly influenced later novels and operas, home and abroad, with its ideological and artistic achievements. It tops the artistic achievement of short stories created in classical Chinese language. Hence, to translate Strange Tales from the Make-do Studio into foreign languages is of great significance for the enhancement and dissemination of Chinese culture and for the cultural communication between the Orient and the Occident. Based on the exploration of domestication and foreignization, this paper makes a tentative study of Strange Tales from Make-do Studio (trans. by Denic C & Victor H. Mair) from the perspective of intercultural translation, analyzes the translators' strategies in dealing with cultural differences, and points out that in the process of intercultural translation, "domestication" and "foreignization", two major translation strategies, supplement each other and should be used flexibly, so as to help disseminate Chinese culture.All in all, it's a complicated work to translate Chinese classics, demanding not only to preserve and show the, flavor of the original culture in the target text but also to consider the target language readers' understanding difficulty and psychological conflicts caused by the foreign culture-carrying target text, which are two contradictory aspects. The Chinese classics translation should be explored comprehensively, i.e. theoretically and practically. Only in this way more achievements can be made in the work of Chinese classics translation and Chinese cultural dissemination.
