Words System's Function In The Cohesion Of The Text

Cohesion and Coherence are two important concepts in the area of text analysis. In this paper, it summarized the main points from overseas and home. Traditional linguistics, cohesion is a means of'grammar and words to achieve the coherence of the text. Grammar methods include reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction, and lexical cohesion. And all of these are distinct cohesive devices.In the opinion of the writer of this paper, besides the above means there are also some other inconspicuous cohesive devices which has something to do with the readers' cognition activities. So we talked about the theories of cognition and psychics which include script theory, activation theory, pattern theory and ideal cognitive model theory. And the pattern theory and ideal cognitive model theory can explain more, so we mainly use these two theories. Furthermore, we offered the concept of words system. It is in fact a special means of the coherence of the text. Its forms are pattern and ICM. And pattern and ICM has different content and different types. These types have different forms in linguistics. The words and sentences irritate the pattern and ICM in the mind of reader. This can help reader to forecast the new information in the text. This is also helpful to the cohesion of the text.The pattern also has some different types. They are mainly affairs pattern, situational pattern, role pattern and ICM. The object of this study is literature writing like novel, essay and poesy. Then we try to find the cohesion words and to analyze its function. In fact, these cohesion words are the inconspicuous cohesive devices. However, most of time, the cohesion of the text is not simply through one cohesive device, but through the mixing of some cohesive devices. So in this paper, it studied the combination of two cohesive devices.
