American nation which is made up by more than 100 nations and ethnic groups is famous for its multiplicity. Scandinavian immigrant group is the particular one of them all. The five nations on the Scandinavia have a lot of common grounds because of same Teutonic lineage, understandable languages, similar geography and interlaced history. The immigrants from this peninsula brought these common grounds to America. In the beginning, a few American Scandinavian immigrants solidified as the people from the same nation. In the second part of 19th Century, affected by their motherlands, they stated Pan-Scandinavianism Movement in many fields in America. However, the diversities of the five nations magnified by the reaching of mass immigrants destine the failure of the movement. Through introducing immigrant backgrounds, immigrants' distributions, religions, culture and politics in America, the dissertation analyzes the living conditions of mass Scandinavian immigrants in America, in order to reveal their characteristic — similar but different.This dissertation is divided into five parts. The second part to the fourth part is the main body of it.The first part is preface. It narrates the elementary conditions of American Scandinavian immigrations, define the period of mass Scandinavian immigration, comb the status quo of Scandinavian immigrant researches and elucidate the purpose of writing this dissertation.The first chapter "The Backgrounds of mass Scandinavian immigrants in American" analyzes the backgrounds of 19th Century mass Scandinavian immigrants through dissertating the immigrant causes, process and composition to show their generalities.The second chapter is about the living conditions of the immigrant group. This part tries to reflect the similarities of the immigrants in the background of multiculturalism by analyzing their distributions, religions, culture and politics in America.Based on the previous chapters, the third chapter "Similar but Different Immigrant Group" analyses the cooperation and divergence of mass Scandinavian immigrants in America and generate their characteristic.The last part of the dissertation is the conclusion. In this part, I summarize the whole dissertation and bring the result of the question- Why American Scandinavian immigrants have assimilated into American main society not by group but by individuals.
