The same as the narrative arts, film and literature are inextricably linked. Based on the relationship between literature and film, I analyze the similarities and differences between the two from the perspective of narrative arts in narrative media, narrative elements, production and acceptance, and then further probe into the mutual influence, infiltration and put forth the literary nature of film and film adaptation.Film adaptation is a typical representative of entanglement of film and literature as well as a concentrated expression of the charm of literary nature. In this proposition, based on the analysis of the similarities and differences between the two artistic forms, taking director Zhang Yimou's works as typical cases, Hero as the dividing line, I divide his works into the former stage and the latter stage after having a full knowledge of his works, and analyze the stylistic difference between the two stages. At the former stage, I choose three film scripts: Red Sorghum, Raise the Red Lantern, to Live, compare these films and literary scripts of the three, take apart the successful experience of literary texts'providing story resources, imaginative space, spiritual orientation and humanistic value for films, and highlight the literary nature of literary texts'contribution to film adaptation and artistic charm. At the latter stage, I choose three grand films: Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Curse of the Golden Flower, and analyze the grand films Zhang Yimou has independently written in recent years and point out their contributions to the film industry, in the mean time, point out they are mostly formally grandiose but disoriented in artistic value, and further discuss the relationship between the disadvantages of grand films and the literary nature of films and thereby draw a lesson, and combine the issue of"literature and film", and the latest filming practice, in the context of the 1990s when the literary nature of films is taken as the benchmark of the artistic value of films, make due theoretical reflection and summary for the sake of the development of Chinese film industry ; at the same time, pinpoint the value and significance of literary nature to films.
