Talking From Book Spine

As the pioneer of printing invention, the book culture of our country has its centuries-old history. But time is not long enough for us to access modern design; we are not able to let it face modern life. So, lots of people don't have a profound and entire understanding about book design, they just focus on the decoration and beautification of book. Talking about the choice of design method, they used to design from the point of whole book. However, the truth is, part design method can give us a brand new design experience; it can help us to do better design. So, from the thinking and recognition of book spine, the author chose the most interested part of book—book spine, and combined the actual design work to research modern book design.From the reasoning of conception, the author considered book spine as the chine and back bone of book. Through the collect and classify of historical document, the author analyzed the visualized feature of Chinese book from the point of book spine; due to different book modality, Chinese books had various aesthetics features, the author concluded these features presented in different historical period, furthermore the sight went to western world, a line was drawn between eastern and western book according to the modality of book spine. Then, the author analyzed the function and design space of book spine from the feature of book, the requirements of market and the design behavior itself. Finally, with the combination of actual design behavior, the author analyzed the design experience that is: design from part of a product, and discussed the feasibility and essential of a certain factor from various aspects, in order to give readers a complete recognition of this method, and use it in their design, to delight their design and start a new design journey.The basic framework of this paper is as follows.The first chapter discussed the facts of book design in our country, educed the theme's background, practical significance and research method of the article.The second chapter analyzed some illustrative content about book spine, clarify the definition of book spine.The third chapter talked about western book art history, discussed the formation and development of book spine and made a foundation for the following discuss.The fourth chapter researched the function and design space of bookspine in book modality and cubical structure, according to the collected data about book spine.The fifth chapter combined the concrete design scheme, making right cognition and choice, forming academic value and design argumentation. The sixth chapter discussed the main development barriers, responses and prospects of BOD businesses for the Chinese publishers.
