Because of the restraints and rules of regular debates, and also the existence of audience and judges, when the two sides of debaters are arguing for their ideas, they need to use some certain politeness strategies to lesson the threat to the hearer's face. From the angle of pragmatics, combing with specific debating examples, this paper displays the usage and effect of all kinds of politeness strategies in regular debates, and compare with the other two kinds of restraint debates-court debates and thesis defense to analyze the features of politeness strategies in regular debates.Variety and inequality of politeness strategies in regular debates: positive politeness, negative politeness, off record, bald on record without redressive actions. While the proportion is not equal: bald on record without redressive actions is used most widely, secondly negative politeness is abundant and plentiful, off record is the third, but negative politeness is seldom employed.There are two ranks of politeness strategies in regular debates: macro-politeness strategies and micro-politeness strategies. The former is defined from the macro-function, that's, the real effect of politeness expression (redressive actions or not, saving the positive face or negative face); the latter refers to the specific speech methods and skills in the mainly same macro-politeness strategiesComparing with court debates and thesis defense, regular debates pay much attention to various politeness strategies; while court debates just employ bald on record without redressive actions; thesis defense mostly uses positive politeness and negative politeness. |
