When mentioned extensive foreign culture introduction in Chinese history, what is talked about most are the spread of Buddhism and the introduction of western learning to China between the end of Qing Dynasty and the beginning of Republic of China. Particularly, as for the introduction of western learning, a lot of scholars pay attention to the period after Opium War, 1840. When talking about the history of Chinese and its modernized study, most Chinese experts on history of language resist that Chinese modern study began after the publish of Lu Zhuangzhang's"The Early Phase of Yi Mu Liao Ran"and Ma Jianzhong's"Ma Shi Wen Tong". Lu and Ma were the earliest experts of Chinese modern study.Between 20s~30s, 20th, Liang Qichao (1873~1929) and Hu Shi (1891~1962) and some other people clearly pointed out that the learning in Qing Dynasty, including Chinese study, i.e. Xiao Xue, had relation to the west. This point, however, was not received powerful support after its proposition. In recent twenty years, the inter-cultural study has obtained great breakthrough. Researchers find that they can never ignore the culture from European countries in 17th and take it as a sort of exotic when work over Chinese history. Nobody will underestimate the close relationship between Chinese learning and western thoughts if he is doing a research with regard to the transition of Ming and Qing Dynasty.The learning in Ming and Qing Dynasty is an innovation and leap for traditional learning in a new academia. The intelligent people in these two dynasties were involved in scientific field, who were encouraged, generally speaking, by western learning. They distinguished traditional theories and those modern ones in accordance to what they were based on. That is, the earlier were on empiricism and some mysterious intuition while the latter on rational demonstration and sense. In this new circumstance, reasonable methods were applied to both natural science and humanities. Because of the encourage, methods for the study of Chinese transited from traditional"Xiao Xue"to systemized demonstrated measures.With the first introduction of western learning, researchers in linguistics field favored a lot. Therefore, it is safe to say that the history of modern Chinese study was two hundred years earlier than what was considered.
