| Systemic functional linguistics, founded by M.A.K. Halliday, has always been of great application value ever since it was born. Although some domestic scholars have already explored into the application of systemic functional linguistics to translation practices, very few of them have touched upon the subject of the guiding role the systemic functional linguistic theory plays in the specific field of translation. The author of this paper, therefore, makes an attempt to apply this theory to the analysis of legal English text as well as legal translation practice. A further contrastive study of two English versions of the Negotiable Instrument Law of the People's Republic of China (hereinafter referred to as NILPRC) is conducted with the purpose of demonstrating the application of systemic functional linguistics to legal translation.In recent years, remarkable achievements have been made in C-E legal translation of our country. However, deficiencies do exist in translating domestic laws into English, such as grammatical mistakes, misrepresentation of technical terms, incomplete understanding of the original text and unfaithfulness to the original in style. All these problems can be reflected in the two authoritative versions of NILPRC. Negotiable instruments law plays an important role in maintaining social, economic and financial order of our country and promoting the development of the socialist market economy. It functions as a milestone in the history of negotiable instruments in our country.
