Vocabulary learning has been very hot in the field of second language acquisition since 1980s. Scholars home and abroad have done quite a few researches on vocabulary learning and its strategy. The input hypothesis is widely acknowledged by western scholars that most vocabulary items are acquired incidentally. The Incidental Vocabulary Learning Hypothesis is based on the child native speakers'vocabulary learning. Being opposite to intentional language learning, it means the vocabulary knowledge by the subjects when doing other tasks. This thesis is an experiment on students'vocabulary incidental acquisition through watching English movies. It aims to testify that watching English movies can result in vocabulary incidental acquisition, and to find out the factors that influence subjects'vocabulary learning.The subjects are 114 non-English majors from a university in Shanghai. The research instruments are vocabulary learning mode questionnaire, vocabulary pre-test, immediate post-test, and delayed post-test to investigate the influence of vocabulary learning mode, movie watching, movie watching tasks and subjects'English proficiency on subjects'vocabulary learning.
