On The Reasons Of Translators' Invisibility And Visibility

This thesis deals with translators'visibility and invisibility and the reasons behind them. Translators'invisibility is the requirement of readers and translation critics. It is the result of the combination of authorship dominance and faithfulness. Translators'low social status is intrinsically linked to translation's low status. Translating is not copying but a kind of rewriting and manipulation. Translators'work is influenced by many factors such as linguistic and cultural differences; the requirement of ideologies; translators'purposes and the translation norms among others. Translators'invisibility is a cover term used by people who neglect translators'work. The thesis begins with a critique of Venuti's the Translator's Invisibility and then goes on to discuss the reasons of translators'invisibility, before taking up the issue of translators'visibility.The thesis adopts a heuristic approach, combining various contemporary translation theories including Reader Response theory, Deconstruction theory and the Manipulation theory, in an attempt to account for the reasons for translators'low status by analyzing the relationships between translators and other people such as, the patrons, authors and readers. The power struggles between translators and other relevant people involving in translating process are also discussed.The research is a stepping stone for further study on power struggles in translation field.
