On The Subjectivity Of The Translator From The Psycho-Cognitive Perspective

In the history of translation studies, the translator has long been regarded as inferior to the author and the original text, his subjectivity being ignored or even denied. The translator's subjectivity, an essential part of translation study is not adequately researched in the traditional text-based translation study. Since the 1970s, with the "cultural turn" in translation and "linguistic turn" in philosophy, with the emergence of new approaches to translation studies, the translator's central status has been rediscovered, the complex role that the translator plays in the whole translation process has become a current heated subject of researchers. Accordingly the study of the subjectivity of the translator has become critically important and is gaining increasing attention among translation theorists.However, these researches have their own weak points. First, there are endless debates on the subject matter for lack of a unified theoretic framework; second, the domain of these researches is restricted to the constraint of external factors, such as text, society and culture; and third, methodologically, these researches belong to static studies rather than dynamic ones. In particular, the notion and embodiments of the translator's subjectivity have not been given systematically explanatory studies and we haven't carried out broad and deep research on the translator — the creator of the translated work.In fact, the translator is the most important factor in the whole translation process; all the other factors like the source text author, source text, culture and target text readers are communicated by the translator. The research on translator's psychological process is an important part in translation, but it has not been studied thoroughly. These theories ignore the fact that the translator, as a man with consciousness, has to be controlled by psychological activity of the mind. So this dissertation aims to present a tentative and systematic analysis from psychological cognitive perspective, to explore how psychological factors interfere with the translator's comprehension of the source text, to set up the translator's subjective role in the translation process.This paper consists of four chapters: chapter one gives the general review of the translator's status from the past humble position to the present subjective status.
