This thesis aims to make a detailed discussion on the Western hermeneutic theories by the analysis of understanding and translating Li Qingzhao's lyric poetry, to expound the relationship between translation and henneneutics, and to point out that the principles of henneneutics such as 'fusion of horizons', 'historicity', and 'prejudice' include interpretation into the hermeneutic circle; that the process of translation is one in which the source text is interpreted, and different understandings lead to different versions. This thesis falls into four parts:Part one is a review of the development of hermeneutics and the main contributors of the theories. In this part, we point out that hermeneutics has always been related to translation.Part two reviews the history of translation, redefines the scope of 'translation', and explains the implication of translation. The relationships between the author and the translator, the source text and the translated text have been discussed. We find that translator's initiative has been realized and enhanced in the development of translation studies. We point out that translation is a process of understanding and expression. The prerequisite of translation is correct understanding, and interpretation is a basic means to help understand. Hermeneutics has been introduced into translation here.Part three is devoted to the analysis of the major viewpoints of Hermeneutics. We incorporate the principles of 'fore-understanding', 'prejudice', 'fusion of horizons', 'effective-history' and 'tradition' with the theories of translation, by which we provide theoretical basis for the following chapter.Part four is the focus of the thesis. This part elaborates the influence of the lyrist Li Qingzhao's historical background, life experience and family life on her lyric poetry. Li's poetry represents the characteristics of the Song Lyric poetry. When translating, translators have their own understanding of the poems. As they themselves have different horizons, so the versions they have rendered vary from each other.Based on modern translation theories, we hold that translation is a culture-related activity involving various factors. Failure to take them into full consideration in the translation process will make it different for readers to get an overall comprehension of the target text. We hope, through this thesis, that we may get an insightful idea of the relations between the factors and the product of translation.
