Film translation as an important aspect in the field of translation studies doesn't receive much attention among translation circles. However, as the international exchanges intensifies and foreign films get prosperous in Chinese cinemas, the function of film translation is becoming more and more evident that no one can afford to neglect it. In order to work out a satisfactory translation of the film dialogue for dubbing actors and actresses, translator should take a lot of factors into consideration. In this thesis, the author will focus mainly on the translational aspects relating to intercultural communication, which means this research about film translation is embedded in the communication theory and culture theory. The theoretical framework which is applied to the practice of film translation is functional theories of translation, which view translation as an intentional, interpersonal and intercultural interaction based on a source text. Originated from German translation studies, this functionalist approach sees an overlap with the practice of film translation of this thesis in terms of cultural and communicative approach.Through identifying the translational problems as a result of cultural discrepancy in film translation, this paper employs a case study to demonstrate the relation between the proposed theory and practice, and then proposes four possible methods to solve those specific problems in the light of functional theories, which are, literal translation, modification translation, reconstruction translation, and non-translation. The flexible adoption of the above methods based on different specific translation situations captures the essence of function theory. All in all, the prospective film translators should always bear the translation purpose and intended spectatorship in mind.In the end, the author touches upon the issue of cultural globalization in a very brief and simple way.
