Xuan Ding's Yeyuqiudenglu and Yeyuqiudengxulu were very popular collections of the short stories in the later Qing Dynasty. AS an imitation of Liaozhaizhiiyi, this two collections have not got properly attention from academic circles, the study on them are scattered and synoptic, and can't reveal comprehensively the achievement and the value of them. This paper's content includes Xuan Ding's life, his work content, narrative art and the comparison of the two collections with Liaozhaizhiyi as well as other imitations. The aim is to give the whole assurance of the tow collections.The main content of introduction is to outline comprehensively and systematically the research condition of Yelu and Xulu from the end of Qing Dynasty until nowadays, through the collection of correlative materials and other people's research results. In view of the weak study of the two collections, the author of this paper proposes the research keys: discussion of the two collections narrative art based on the theory of narratology; the comparison of the two collections with Liaozhaizhiyi and other imitations. The two aspects are both new fields.The first chapter names Xuan Ding's life, his writings and the creative impetus of his works. The paper points out that Xuan Ding's rough life experiences form his indignant feelings, resentment of the world and detestation of mundane affairs; The paper arranges the editions of the two collections and concludes that Mr. Lu Xun's opinion is not true. Lu Xun considered the main content of Yelu as the reduction of foxes and ghosts and the addition of prostitutes. The reason of Lu Xun's error is the problem of editions. Xuan Ding's indignant feelings can be seen in all his writings; Lastly, the author point out the important creative impetus of the two collections is to express Xuan Ding's indignant feelings. As a result, this psychology affected the choice of the theme and the artistic performance way.
