An Analysis Of Wordsworth's Poems And Their Translation From The Perspective Of Halliday's Three Metafunctions

Based on the three metafunctions in Systemic-functional Linguistics by Halliday, this thesis analyzes the language characteristics of Wordsworth's poems and their versions.William Wordsworth was the founder of English romantic movement in 19th century and representative of lake poets. His poems often express common people's feeling with simple and vivid language of the mass. Therefore, Wordsworth is often honored as Poet of nature and pastoral.As for the translation of poems, traditional translators focus on conveying the beauty of music, vision, style and artistic concept of the original. However, it is a new attempt to analyze the transmission of the beauty from the perspective of systemic-functional linguistics (SFL), which aims to appreciate a different kind of beauty of poetry from the angle of linguistics. Present research of applying SFL to poetry analysis and translation, however, is limited to translating Chinese poems into English.
