The paper aims to interpret Byatt's masterpiece Possession in Marxist dialectics. The first chapter consists of two parts. The first part is to introduce Byatt and Possession. The focus is on the introduction of the plot and narrative modes of Possession. The second part is to review the critical works on Possession at home and abroad. Based upon the collection and analysis of the critique on Possession, the author of the paper presents his own ideas. The second chapter is assigned to introduce Marxist criticism. It covers the three phases of Marxist criticism and discusses the connotation of dialectical Marxist criticism. In the third part of this chapter the author of the present paper introduces the dialectical Marxist strategy applied in the paper. In the third chapter Possession is interpreted from the perspective of Marxist dialectics in the three concentric frames. In the personal political horizon, the text is understood as a symbolic individual solution to social contradictions and it projects some Utopian desire for social reform. In the class horizon, the text is reconstructed into great collective or class discourse. From the class perspective of middle-class woman intellectuals, Possession deconstructs Western Male-centrism and shakes the value system of traditional male narrative both in story and discourse. Possession is interpreted as a rational reflection and criticism on Western Male-centrism as well as Capitalist productive means and Capitalist productive relationships where Western male-centered discourse roots. In the last horizon of history, the text and its ideology experience the last reform. The text is understood as the symbolic information conveyed by the coexistence of different sign-systems, which are the traces or indications of various productive means and social structural patterns. The paper makes a historical interpretation of Possession in the perspective of dialectical Marxist criticism, In the paper, the form and content of the novel and its social basis and value are dialectically integrated to make a thorough historical interpretation.
