This article begins from Yu Ying-shi's research in Shi culture. The tradition of shi has continued about 2,000 years in china, but it was notunchangeable. It differs a lot in the different stages of Chinese history. Generallyspeaking, "shi" was a free-lance lobbyist in the Pre-Qin Time, whereas it was called scholar-bureaucrat after Qin Dynasty and Han Dynasty. Because of their striking social characteristics, the"shi" reached its height immediately after the birth. This dissertation focuses on an overall discussion of "shi" in Pre-Qin Time. by describing the evolution of the idea of Shi, Yu tries to tell us that from the period of Pre-Qin to War State, just for the sake of the "breakthrough of Philosophy", "seeking the Dao" has become the basic characteristic of intellectual stratum. What's more, Yu places his understanding into a horizon of comparing Chinese culture with Western one. Because of the"breakthrough of Philosophy" in Pre-Qin period, intellectuals begin to emphasis "resorting to self" and "self-seeking" in the aspects of"Dao" and "Learning" . It is called "immanence transcendence " .Yu wants to find the part which can be transformed in Chinese traditional culture just by comparing Chinese culture with Western one, and re-interpret the role of Shiwhen facing the context of interaction between Chinese and Western culture. All these also express the modern meaning in Yu's research about Shi.
