Picaresque novel is a narrative form of literature which occurred in the late half of the 16th century in Spain, which is in a tight connection with the social background, while the influence of the ancient Greek and mediaeval literature brings the four essential characteristics of picaresque novels: the narrative in the first person, the episodic structure, the modelized figure and the humorous and satiric style. Since its birth, this literary form has exerted a great influence on the foreign novels of the same sort, two of which, namely, Adventure of Huckleberry Finn and On the Road respectively created in the 19th and the 20th centuries, can be taken for instance, for they possess the basic characteristics of the conventional form of picaresque novels. Since each of the literary forms is created in its specific historical and cultural circumstance and obtains various features in each time or region, none of them is established without further development. The two novels as examples not only reflect the essential characteristics of picaresque novels, but the innovation and development of this literary form in the specific times.In addition to the introduction and the conclusion, the thesis divides into three chapters: In the first chapter, this thesis presents a literature review of the occurrence, historical background and cultural origin of this literary form and its artistic features through analyzing the text of some early works; in the second chapter, it exhibits the conventional characteristics of Adventure of Huckleberry Finn and On the Road; the...
