| Translation criterion is the scale to measure the quality of target text; from the perspective of axiological philosophy, translation criterion is actually the evaluative criterion of translation. The problem of translation criterion is one of the basic problems in translation theoretical study, and also a vexed issue in translation history. In this thesis, on the basis of axiology, the author argues that consideration should be given to both subjective and objective factors in setting a reasonable translation criterion. However, the traditional unitary translation criterion emphasizes the objective factors and ignores the subjective ones, therefore goes to the absolute objectivism; on the other hand, the translation criterion under deconstruction influence emphasizes the subjective factors and neglects the objective ones, thus goes to theother extreme-the subjective relativism. With the deep-going study of translation,the view of the multiplicity of translation criteria is proposed. Based on a comprehensive study on some famous scholars' contributions, the author proposes her own argument: the translation criterion can be and should be multiple; but the existence of the multiplicity is prerequisite by a lowest limitation, namely 1) respecting the objectivity of knowledge, 2) conforming to the reasonableness of understanding and general validity of interpretation, 3) respecting the intention of source text. The new criterion is founded on the truth theory of consensus. We shall find the rational basis of the new criterion respectively from the perspective of linguistics, epistemology and axiological philosophy. Compared with the old criteria, the new criterion takes both subjective and objective factors into consideration. Meanwhile, it is dynamic and open-ended, social and developing. The establishment of the new criterion will benefit the translators, readers, and the source text itself, and will guide the translation study to develop in a more systematic and scientific direction.
