Tang-Song poetry is a precious gem of Chinese culture. It is the zenith of classical Chinese poetry. By means of color images, the poets painted colorful and beautiful paintings. Every color in the Tang-Song poetry was put in good use either to depict landscapes or to express the poets' sentiment. All the colors displayed the poets' emotion and social culture context in Tang and Song Dynasties and thus color images are of unique artistic charm. Although in translation field, there are some research achievements about the translation of Tang-Song poetry, up till now, few people have undertaken scientific research on color images in Tang-Song poetry and their translation. On the basis of the image theory in Chinese conventional literary documents and the research findings on poetry and its translation from the aspect of image made by the previous scholars both at home and abroad, the thesis examines the color images in Tang-Song poetry from various angels and probes into the best way to translate them.This thesis is composed of five parts. Firstly, it introduces the research scope and background. In the second part, it begins with a literature review of image theory both in Chinese and western poetic circles and goes on to discover the intimacy of image and culture. In the third part, it expounds the color images in Tang-Song poetry, their classification, their combination and their translation, finding color images have their cultural connotation. In the fourth part, it reviews major translation schools and puts forward they all agree to preserve the spirit or the beauty of the images in poetry and talks about the difficulties and essence of the transference of color image and mainly deals with two strategies (domestication and foreignization) of color image translation. Accordingly, some specific techniques in accordance with these two strategies are to be expounded.
