The translation of All Men Are Brothers by Pearl S. Buck, was widely criticized and for a long time regarded as a bad translation, especially for its language.However, the translation strategies that Pearl Buck used are closely related to her cultural background and living experience. She grew up and lived in China for the first half of her life, therefore, she had a dual-cultural identity, i.e Chinese and Western cultural identity.This thesis applies cultural hermeneutical theories to the discussion of the pre-understandings, the aesthetic tastes, and practical strategies in the translation of All Men Are Brothers.It is composed of three chapters. Chapter One focuses on the pre-understandings of Pearl Buck. Since she could hardly find a cultural identity either in the States or in China, Pearl Buck tried to build up a dual-cultural identity for herself. Meanwhile, she advocated the equal footing of cultural exchange between China and West.Chapter Two analyzes the main differences in the translations of Shui Hu Zhuan between Pearl Buck and the other two western translators to find her aesthetic tastes. The additions of her personal understandings about Shui Hu Zhuan and Chinese culture to her translation, especially elements in default in the source language cause many criticisms.Chapter Three discusses the three main tactics in Pearl Buck's translation. The first one is to manifest the cultural meanings of the words and phrases in Shui Hu Zhuan. The second is to imitate the sentence structures of Shui Hu Zhuan. The third is to express her own insights in understanding of the original.
