Code-switching has been a subject of great scholarly attention in recent decades. Researchers have done much on it from the perspectives of syntax, sociolinguistics, psycolinguistics, pragmatics and discourse analysis. Furthermore, it is regarded as a central issue in bilingualism research and the studies on its implication in bilingual classrooms are of great value. This thesis studies college English teachers' code-switching between English and Chinese in the classroom for non-English majors, that is to say, the fact that college English teachers use Chinese while they are teaching English to Chinese students.Since 1980s, there has existed a long-standing controversy about whether it is advisable to use the native language in foreign language teaching and learning. And due to it, the distinction between intralingual teaching strategies and crosslingual teaching strategies occurs. According to intralingual teaching strategies, the target language is the only language which teachers can use in foreign language teaching and learning.
