Language and culture are closely linked to each other. With the development of international trade and globalization, more and more foreign language teachers are aware that culture teaching plays an important role in foreign language teaching and that intercultural communicative competence is an integral part of communicative competence. However, Chinese EFL learners'intercultural communicative competence is far behind their linguistic competence, they are even seriously lacking intercultural communicative competence. Moreover, teachers now deal with the cultural elements in foreign language teaching in a random and unplanned way and there is a lack of systematization in culture teaching. Therefore, teachers need to find and apply feasible and effective approaches for an overall development of students'intercultural competence. In this situation, the thesis studies this problem, introduces the methods of contrastive analysis and tries to prove its feasibility with empirical investigation. The thesis is divided into six parts.Chapter One is an introduction of the research background, purposes and organization of the thesis. Chapter Two is literature review. In this part the thesis probes into several aspects of culture teaching, including the definition of culture, the necessity and goals of culture teaching, review of culture teaching in EFLT abroad and in China, contrastive analysis method and its application in foreign language teaching, and the important role of home culture in using contrastive analysis method.
