The Study On The Bounding Of Verbs In Chinese

This dissertation is concerned on the bounding of verbs in Chinese . The establishment of term limit not only on the conception of nouns, but also on the verbs. The starting and finishing points of verbs can be seen as a time limit set . Our arguments based on Jiaxuan-Shen's theory . We believe that divided verbs into"bounded"and"unbounded"is not enough . This will be the basis for the verbs to be a more detailed distinction.The more important feature of verbs is their timing. The timing feature of verbs can be seen from two aspects : internal part and external part. Timing system is the important theoretical background of the verbs bounding analysis. Correspondingly, we will consider the verbs bounding also from both internal and external aspects.The first part mainly study the"internal limits"of verbs . Internal timing limits means the verbs have a process which followed the time going. This is an observation on verbs in a static, simple environment , and it is focused on the verbs itself. We take the"Chinese language verb usage dictionary"as the target . And through certain identified terms, we divided verbs into five categories: non-limited verbs, former-limited verbs, double-limited verbs, latter-limited verbs and point verbs. Through quantitative statistics, we conclude that internal limits of verbs can be seen as a continuous system which is a continuum of movements gradually increase, a homogeneous to heterogeneous, a limited to unlimited process.The second part mainly study the"external limits"of verbs. The external timing limits means whether situation the verbs refer to can be a specific incident of outside world situation. According to this standard, we divided verbs into displayed verbs and concealed verbs. For displayed verbs, we focused on the impact of timing volume phrase and aspect markings; for concealed verbs ,we focused on the semantic type of the sentence.In other words, the two complementary and interactive parts together constitute a complete limits system. Through studying on the limits system of verbs, on the one hand, we can make some basic supplement to the timing and aspect system, on the other hand, some restrictions grammar can be explained.
