| Professor Xu Yuanchong, is an outstanding translator of China in the late 20th century. He has made contribution to the spread of Chinese literature to the rest of the world and his translations are accepted with recognition and admiration. Based on his extensive practice and experiences, Professor Xu has put forward quite a few concepts and notions about translation, which can be regarded as a synthesis of traditional translation theories in China from ancient times and his own creative insight. His translation thoughts are accepted and acknowledged by many translators and translation theorists. Some of his notions, however, have evoked poignant criticism from some scholars. Especially, the concept of "three beauties" proposed by Prof. Xu has once triggered a host of controversies. In this thesis, the author attempts to review Xu's translation thoughts from the perspective of intertextual theory, in the hope that the approach presented in this paper can shed new light on this debatable issue and provided some fresh ideas for the researchers in this field.Intertextuality is one of the most frequently used terms in contemporary critical vocabulary. Since its coinage by Kristeva in 1969, this term has acquired much recurrence in many research fields, including literature, culture, art and architecture, etc. Since 1990, the intertextual theory has become a hot issue in translation studies. Translation theorists both at home and abroad have dedicated their time and efforts to its theoretical research. Since this theory is mainly on text encoding and decoding, it is highly relevant to translation studies. However, the research in this field is still at its beginning stage. In this thesis, the author traces the two orientations of intertextuality and explores the affinity between the intertextual theory and translation studies.As an attempt to apply intertextual theory to Xu's translation, the present thesis focuses on two points: 1) to improve methodological and terminological instruments for researchers of Xu's translation; 2) to probe into the intertextual theory and find corresponding points between the theory and translation studies.
