The present thesis makes an attempt to probe into noun phrases(NP) , especially possession NP. The author investigates all kinds of situation where NP divide and move in the sentences, in order to discover the reasons and rules which govern the NP' s dividing movement.Introduction defines the NP' dividing movement, determining the study domain.The main body of the thesis is divided into four parts. The first part presents academic research on NP' dividing movement at home and abroad , meanwhile, the author points out that some of studies are really great achievement, yet some problems still exist, the most important problem is that case issues are not solved very well. The second chapter deals with the classification of the NP' dividing movement. It has been divided into four types according to its direction and elements. The author also give the explanation to some typical movement phenomenon and points out their theoretical defect. The third part focuses on the syntactic and semantic features of NPs in their dividing movement, the fourth part discusses the syntactic and semantic features of verb phrases in the dividing movement. The fifth part is about the syntactic and semantic features of the sentences containing NP' dividing movement. After the dividing movement, the topic word will get peripheral case through its raising movement, while the accusative word project its core case through parallel movement. The sixth chapter concludes the reasons and regulations which govern the NP' dividing movement.The conclusion sums up the whole process, explaining some syntactic phenomenon related to the NP' dividing movement.
