Translated Text-A Result Of Translator's Manipulation Under Socio-cultural Constraints

The paper presents a preliminary study of the literary translations from a cultural perspective. It aims to emphasize that literary translation studies can be conducted in a descriptive approach and should seek insight by relating the individual instances of translation to a set of socio-cultural factors which govern the production of translations.The paper starts with a review of traditional translation theories and proceeds to reveal their several drawbacks and why these drawbacks might stifle further inquiries into translation. Then the paper proposes to adopt a descriptive approach and study translation by first describing it as it is and then analyzing the interrelations between translation and such socio-cultural factors as prospective function of a translation, translation poetics, power and ideology. The paper further puts forward that the socio-cultural factors issue constraining forces which pull the translator into different directions. The translator, the manipulator of a translating activity, weighs these constraining forces, conforms to them to different degrees by adopting all kinds of manipulative techniques and reaches an equilibrium between these constraints.
