As computers and Internet users increase, long system response time (SRT) becomes one of the severest problems in HCI. Keeping users waiting evokes dissatisfaction and negative emotion, sometimes may also result in low efficiency. It is impossible to reduce objective SRT infinitely. To shorten user perception of SRT by way of effective HCI design can be another way to improve user satisfaction and system usability. Besides, researches on perception of SRT and its related variables can be complementary for theories of time perception.Searching task and prospective time production paradigm were used to explore effects of waiting message and task characteristics on subjective estimation of SRT in the present study, including three experiments. In Experiment One, meaning and speed of waiting message in three different duration of SRT were tested in a time estimate task. In Experiment Two, effects of waiting message content and task type on estimation of SRT were examined. In Experiment Three, effects of affective arousal, task difficulty and task goal were considered. Results were as follows: (1) Meaning and speed of waiting message had distinct influence on time estimation, meaningful message and high speed of message caused larger overestimate. (2) Relational tasks caused larger underestimate than specific tasks, especially with task-correlative waiting message. (3) Affective arousal made a difference between two high valence groups and one low valence group, the latter underestimated SRT in a large extent. (4) Task difficulty only influenced the low valence group, with large underestimated SRT in difficult task. (5) Task goal toward accuracy caused larger underestimate than goal toward speed, especially in difficult tasks. In sum, time perception of SRT was influenced by cognitive resource and affective arousal.
