The period from 1840 to 1890 is named poetic realism in the history of German literature, which was a part of European thought of the realism. The poetic realism persists that authors should escape from momentous social issues and try to dig up poetic things in common lives. Theodor Storm is one of the outstanding and representative writers in it and his novels are loved by a number of readers all over the world.Theodor Storm always keeps a little distance from the society, and put his dramatis personae in the pure and peaceable atmosphere. He describes sentimental love, cares about women' destiny and tries to construct a world filled with eternal healthy humanity.Theodor Storm paints the rich and colorful Nature, which plays an important role in the novels as a foil to the atmosphere, which pushes the development of narration. At the same time, the author expresses his eager longing for freedom, love and beauty.Theodor Storm attaches importance to the artistic techniques in his composition. As an outstanding writer in the poetic realism, he exerts his efforts to carry out his idea. In his novel, the poetic features are made up of artistic conception, symbolic imago and good rhythm.Theodor Storm expresses his attention to the Nature and human through his works, but the dominant things he desires to say about is that a harmonious society is highly necessary to humankind.
