During the Cold War period, there were still vehement battles between the USAand the Soviet Union. The South Asia is a conflicting district. For several reasons, there had been mutually hostile between India and Pakistan since the day theydeparted. In 1971, the western government of Pakistan holding domestic powersuppressed the Awami League in the eastern region who requested autonomy, itcaused Pakistan internal political crisis. The military repression in East Pakistanprompted an increasing flow of refugees into India, and India intervened in the crisiswith the intention of split up and weaken Pakistan. The Soviet Union supported India;on the contrary, China supported Pakistan. Then the crisis extended, turning into thethird India-Pak War gradually. Owing to the complicated relation with Soviet Union,China, India and Pakistan in the south, the Nixon administration "tilted" towardPakistan during the period of crisis. This text analyzes the policy of the Nixon Administration for the South AsianCrisis of 1971, with the latest declassified documents of the USA government and itsrelated database resources and also describes the crisis which have reflected the racereligious conflicts in south Asia and the relations between each main power in theCold War, picturing the foreign policy of the Nixon administration in this complicatedevent. Furthermore, we may conclude the foreign policy of the Nixon administrationto be a characteristic that maintains the balance between the main powers. This text includes three parts: The preface, the text and the conclusion.Preface: Introduce the researching object, content and production of thisresearched area.Text: Expounding the background, the changing process and analysis of thepolicy about the Nixon Administration for the South Asian Crisis in 1971.â’ˆ Elaborating the background of the policy. This is thepolicy which the Nixon administration chose after investigating the relationshipbetween the United States and the main countries involved in the crisis, this kind of"tilted" policy produced the profound effect: " tilted" was not effective andBangladesh became independent, which made Pakistan lose the trust of the UnitedStates, on the other hand, this "tilted" policy made the relationship between Americaand Soviet Union to the lowest point. But this kind of policy repelled the importanceof the Soviet Union to the south Asia, and also controlled China. The West Pakistanwas preserved as the power of repressing India, also the power kept balance in southAsia. This embodies that the foreign policy of the Nixon administration has acharacteristic that the big power maintains the balance of power. During this crisis,it's the first time that America and China made an Anti-Soviet initiative together inthe history.
