A Brief Survey Of China Western Movies

China Western Movies in this thesis refer to those movies cast since 1984 in the unique natural, geographical and historical Western regions, depicting the social historical conditions, human spirit and life joys and sorrows in West China.China Western Movies are in constant change and development. According to their style and content, the thesis classifies the twenty-some years of western movies development into four periods, namely Forming Period, Lingering Period, Development Period and Exploring Period, and analyzes in depth representative works of each period from perspectives such as the nature and historical culture depicted, the demands of times reflected, and evaluation and reflection on national development.Based on the brief review of the historical development of China Western Movies, the thesis attempts a cultural interpretation of them from two perspectives, i.e. the orientation of West China in the movies, and changes in character identity and spirits. The west regions has been changing gradually from a backward and barren area limiting human potential into one which acknowledges human efforts and manifests demands of times, and finally developing into a spiritual home for those in need of protection. The characters in the movies have been changing from those sons and daughters attempting to escape from their land to the women characters who are depressed and waiting for salvation, and have been changing from those village women who migrated to cities to realize their self-value to male heroes protecting their homes. This thesis believes that all those changes are closely related to the psychological journey the nation has made for the past twenty-some-year of reform and opening-up, i.e. from the lack of confidence in the beginning because of the backwardness and ignorance, to the strenuous self-development and pursuit of advancing with the times, to the final attention on the existence and value of the nation when the confidence was recalled, which may be summed up as the journey from uneasiness to peaceful return.
