A Semiotic Approach To Interlingual Translation

As an intercultural communication activity, translation has exerted great influence on human beings since the very beginning of human communication. Consequently, translation studies has enjoyed a long history and has constantly drawn attention from a variety of disciplines, ranging from linguistics to anthropology. With the rapid development of other disciplines and of translation studies itself, both the process and the product of translation can be approached from the perspectives of other disciplines. This interdisciplinary research method enables the scholars who have devoted themselves to translation studies to get out of the traditional stereotyped research's confines, and to establish guidelines which are of great values to translation practice on the basis of other disciplines pertaining to translation studies. Among the great variety of disciplines, one is capable of shedding light on translation studies because of the resemblance borne by both, that is, semiotics, which studies the production, transmission, exchange, interpretation, and use of message which is contained in signs.This thesis, taking semiotic theories as its underlying rationale, ushers translation studies into a brand-new field, that is, semiotics, proves the applicability of semiotic approach to interlingual translation, analyzes the similarities shared by both and attempts to improve the modes of translation modeling on semiosis and elaborates on the three types of semiotic meaning in relation to translation with abundant examples.With the aim of making a systematic investigation of interlingual translation from a semiotic perspective, this thesis consists of five chapters:Chapter 1 proposes the motivation of this thesis.Chapter 2 introduces the history, research scope, fundamental questions, and development of semiotics in order to provide prospective readers with some basic knowledge of semiotics and to pave the way for the following analysis.Chapter 3 provides an introduction of the fundamental concepts in Charles Peirce's semiotics and intends to establish their relationships with corresponding concepts in translation with the aim of probing into the whole process of translation from a more...
