The adverbial bound "adj.+n."structure is an uncommon structure in contemporary Chinese. This pattern has the following three characteristics. The first is that it is a non-typical transmitting syntactic structure with weak function. The second is that it can act as adverbial but not predicate. The third is the entire dissimilation of the structure, that is the non-substantive characteristic. The three features determine the special status of the adverbial bound"adj.+n"structure as a type of phrase and at the same time its value as a subject for special study. The thesis is based upon the three coexisting theory of three-dimension (syntactic-semantic-pragmatic) with focus on the deductive, synchronic, ontological approach. The author hopes to analyze the adverbial bound"adj.+n"structure with the theory of three-dimension on the basis of past achievement and with the guidance of semantic feature and valency theory, connected with transformational analysis and focus theory. The thesis is divided into six parts. The first part examines the internal formation of the adverbial bound"adj.+n"structure and concludes that A stands for metric tone adjective and N stands for disyllable abstract noun to express attribute. The second part explores the syntactic function of the adverbial bound"adj.+n"structure. It concludes that AN structure acts as adverbial and attributive but not predicative and AN in sentences mainly modifies the verbs with double syllables. Besides, the rhetorical function of the AN structure tends to be unmarked, that is without "的/地", which is the reversal phenomenon of marks. The third part inspects the grammatical natures of the AN structure and concludes that AN is adverbial. The fourth part examines the semantic features of AN structure. It is concluded that AN structure is metric and its origin is that AN structure is transmitting structure with weak function. That is to say, because referential meaning of N is weak and declarative meaning is strong, N is made to be close to A to make the structure deviate in function. AN structure in sentences metricizesthe attribute of verbs and it has the constraints of structural meaning on the internal structure of AN and VP. The fifth part explores the pragmatic features of AN structure. It is concluded that AN structure as adverbial serves to highlight focus and the structure mainly appears in formal styles. The last part is the conclusion of the whole thesis and proposes the problems for further study.
