Translation is a process based on the theory that is possible to abstract the meaning of a text from its forms and reproduce that meaning with the very different forms of a second language. Also, translation is the most faithful communication, as exact as possible. In translation as well as in communication, meaning lies at the foundation. The translation should transfer both the semantic message and the stylistic information.Peter Newmark's translation theory—"a correlative approach to translation" combines semantic and communicative translation. Peter Newmark thinks that all translations must be in some degree both communicative and semantic .It is actually a matter of difference of emphasis. Communicative translation, however, is concerned mainly with the receptors, usually in the context of a language and cultural variety, while semantic translation is concerned with the transmitter usually as an individual, and often in contradistinction both to his culture and to the norms of his language. He states clearly there is no purely semantic translation or purely communicative translation in translation practice, and only through a combination of the two methods can a translation be both accurate in meaning and acceptable to the target language reader. On the basis of the theory,this thesis studies the English Version of Fortress Besieged in style, culture and aesthetic appeal. The study shows that the theory of correlation can play an important role in translation practice. This thesis consists of three chapters.Chapter One gives a brief introduction to translation theories, which deals primarily with the definition of translation, translation process, translation and communication. More focus is put on Peter Newmark's semantic and communicative translation theory.Chapter Two is dedicated to the introduction to the original novel, Fortress Besieged, and Chfen Chung-shu as well as the linguistic characteristics of the novel.Chapter Three is the core part of this thesis. This chapter concentrates on the study on the English Version of Fortress Besieged. Some typical examples are listed and the explanation of these examples may give a more vivid demonstration on semantic and communicative translation to render different parts of the original from the perspectives of style, culture and aesthetic appeal.Finally the thesis concludes that Peter Newmark's translation theory—"a correlative approach to translation", applies successfully to the English Version of Fortress Besieged. It proves that all translations must be in some degree both communicative andsemantic. The theory plays a key role in the English translation of Fortress Besieged.
