This article attempt to analyse the novels written by the American writers of Chinese origin from forties to the middle of nineties of twenty centuries, then find out from the view of visualism,the skeleton of development concerning,the self-construct and psychology image which were represented by the main roles in the writings of some typical American novelists of Chinese origin.Related to the cross of Chinese culture and American culture, this research has obvious color of comparative literature study.In the novels of American writer of Chinese origin, the factors of novel and biography interlace with each other, which makes the attempt feasible. This article has choosen the typic writers of six different periods, analyzed and deduced some of their works, especially the stories of the dramatis personae and their appearing self-role stipulation, outlined a picture of progress and change of the role of the American citizens of Chinese origin in new days.The evolvement of the role can be approximately divided into three periods. the first period is childhood, the typic writing is 《 Fifth Chinese Daughter》 (1945) ,written by Jade Snow Wong.the second period is juvenile, the typic writing is 《The Woman Warrior:Memories of a Girlhood Among Ghosts》 (1976) ,written by Maxine Hong Kingston and 《The Joy Luck Club》 (1989) ,written by Amy Tan. the third period is youth,the typic writing is three novels published simultaneously in 1991: 《China Boy》 ,by Gus Lee; 《Typical American》, by Gish Jen; 《Pangs of Love》 ,by David Wong Louie .The fourth period is maturity, the typic writing is 《Bone》 (1993) ,written by Fae Nyenne Ng.In the first period,the role in the novel by the American writers of Chinese origin seems to be the child who just gives a first glance to the world-"the lovely baby",this exhibits a prevalent face of eyeless truckling, under the condition that American citizens of Chinese origin were suffered from racialism heavily.this is a slavish behavior, in the second period of the novels written by the American writers of Chinese origin, we can see the symptome of literature role in juvenile period. the maximal character is thedramatis personae show revolting to the main America society and can ultimately look on their original culture-the traditional Chinese culture, from an active point of view, in the third period, the several novels published all but the same time, have showed us the faces of the American youth of Chinese origin who are multicutural and just beginning the independent evolution of mentality, they have grown and been affected by the education on culture and the view about value of the main America society(the effect of schooling and condition of work),but they can began to make decision which is not always right but very independent without being manipulated by others.Their last target is to live well in the society, but they have not to be very confident and not to be fully sure about their opinion, they were still groping. To the fourth period, there showed us an adult character of American citizens of Chinese origin.he(she) can clearly analyse the advantages and disadvantages about Chinese and American culture, make choice and has a tolerant heart that contains the culture .This is a superexcellent comparison about the American citizens of Chinese origin who have been able to introject confidently to the America society and live on,walk a way of their own.The whole article has strong property of metaphor during the course of discussing the evolution of the character of the American citizens of Chinese origin,that is based on the analysis of typic samples,do synthetical conclusion and abstraction,this method of outlining the literature role,which has the character of cartoon,is the author's attempt,will help to dig out the possible hindden truth in the trivial detail. |
