The Research Of Adverbs On Gao Seng Zhuan

Gao Seng Zhuan written by Hui Jiao in Liang Dynasty , is a monk biography that includes 257 monks. The work, which has great value in Buddhism history, is important linguistic corpora. The material in this book is highly trustworthy and is much simi lar to the spoken language during that time. Therefore, Gao Seng Zhuan is quite useful during our research on the Middle Ages Chinese language.For the present, researchers pay much attention to collation, collection and hermeneutic on Gao Seng Zhuan, while the grammatical research on it is far away from enough,thus we select the adverbs on Gao Seng Zhuan to do some research.This paper is organized into three chapters:First:Outline of Gao Seng Zhuan(first half):In the chaper, we make a overall and systemic description and classification of adverbs on Gao Seng Zhuan, trying to draw the outline of basic aspect of it. There are 547 adverbs in the Gao Seng Zhuan, which are divided into eight categories,such as adverbs of time, adverbs of degree, adverbs of scope, mood adverbs, modal adverbs, link adverbs, negative adverbs and adverbs of indicating and substituting.Second: Outline of Gao Seng Zhuan (second half):In the chaper, we contrast the adverbs on Gao Seng Zhuan with the adverbs on other linguistic corpora. We analyse the characteristic of these adverbs and reveal its position in the history of Chinese grammar through historical comparision and synchronic study.Third:Case study:In the chaper, we select some adverbs in the Gao Seng Zhuan to case study, trying to analyze the process and causation of their grammaticalization.
