A Study On Yangxiong's Literary Theory

Yang Xiong is a man of great learning ,many works and rich thoughts;reseach workers can study him from various aspects. Studing his works from his literary criticism,we can find that his criticism elaborates some basic questions on the difference between words and meanings from the pre-Qin days on and it has its own systems.Yang think that the people cannot express their mind by words and their words by writing because of 'style faults'and 'intention faults',but the sages can because their style and intention can be unanimous so that they can express their meaning precisely which is difficult for the Ordinary people.Qn the base of the views on words and meanings ,Yang advances the famous idea ,that is ,Ci writers' Fu are splendid and extravagant,but poets' Fu are splendid and proper ,which difference between Ci and Fu is in accordance with writers' status. Ci writers' Fu are more encouragable Jess critical , more extravagant , less useful.So Yang criticizes them firmly because their Fu cannot fully convey their ideas , but poets' Fu conforms to the Confucianists' moral standard and can fully express their ideas and Yang affirms it.Yang xiong's views on words and meanings as well as views on style connotes the essence of 'make Dao understandable,let sages agree,take the classics as models' and a kink of values that is giving more consideration on practical use but literary grace as well.
