College students are in a specific period of physical and mental development. However, due to their immature cognitive ways and defense ways, they often don't know how to successfully cope with the stress situations in their life. The phenomena of committing suicide and committing crimes on campus are indicators of their incompleteness of coping ways. As one kind of self-medicating abilities, the coping ability plays an important role in alleviating and medicating the stress. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to compile a scale concerning the coping ability of college students, and to investigate the characteristics of their ability in this aspect. These results will provide some theoretic bases for mental health education of college students.Based on an open-ended questionnaire and literature pertinent, the study analyzes the stress situation and the coping characteristics of college students in their study and everyday life. According to relevant scales at home and abroad and experts' suggestions, we compile the task sub-scale of coping ability of college students. What's more, the characteristics of coping ability of college students are investigated with this scale.The results of the study show that:(1) The self-designed scale of coping ability of college students is of high reliability and fair validity.
