The study of metaphor has a history of over two thousand years. Traditionally, it was confined to rhetoric. With the development of science, more and more other disciplinary show interests to metaphor, and provide some new angles for the study of metaphor. Richards and Lakoff studied metaphor cognitively, which refreshed the study of metaphor. They treated metaphor not only a linguistic phenomenon, but also a thinking mode and a cognitive method. Thinking reflects the characteristics of certain society, so metaphor is also an activity of culture, and contains rich cultural denotation.The task of pragmatics is to find out and research on how the different cultures use different language rules. Pragmatically, metaphor is a context phenomenon existing in sentences. Context is the concrete condition for the existence of metaphor. The key to the understanding of metaphor is to look for the association between context and the sentences with metaphorical meaning. The differences between cultures inevitably brand metaphor different characteristics. Translation is the bridge of communication between different cultures. In translating, in order to avoid misunderstanding and inappropriate expressions, translators should pay attention to the practical application and the communicative functions of language in specific context so as to seek the true information inferred in the original as accurate as possible, and apply the basic approaches flexibly. In the light of relevance theory, and in view of intercultural communication and pragmatics, the paper will mainly talk about how to understand and deal with metaphors properly, propose the principles of the equivalence of information, style and appreciation as a guide to translation practice, and discuss some translation methods of metaphors.
