George Orwell was a great English writer in 20th century. his two most famous novels , Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty—Four , have been translated into more than 60 languages , with millions of copies sold around the world . His reputation and influence have made the study of the figure and his writings a hot topic in the past 50 years, which has expanded into many other fields of the Humanities. Different from the wealthy study of George Orwell abroad, the concern of the writer and his work in Chinese academic circles is just at its very beginning. Therefore, there is much room for a variety of interpretation of the writer who we still know so little and his work which affected the world so much.. The paper is composed of the following five parts. Introduction: After addressing a brief introduction about George Orwell and his work, this part reviews the comments upon the writer as well as his work home and abroad. Afterwards the writing structure of the paper is provided, which includes the interpretations from the text itself, the literary tradition context and the social context. Part One: This part focuses the text itself. Because of its total ambiguity and its radical uncertainty, the text emits a sense of nightmare, the essence of which is the homogeneity. So what the hero of the novel pursues is the difference. But in Oceania where the evil in man explodes completely, Winston's resistance has no effect on it no matter Winston wins or not. Part Two: After reviewing the Utopian literature and analyzing the part the novel played in its tradition, this part reaches its conclusion that the novel subverted the literary genre of Utopia in its structure, the narrative model and its humanism kernel. Thus, it affected the development of the utopian literature. Part Three: This part interprets the text on the background of social context and probes into its significance. Based on the "Disciplinary Power Theory "from Michel Foucault and other theorists, this part discloses the ruling methods of the totalitarian government in Oceania. In fact, the Oceania is a carceral society under Big Brother's authoritative gaze as well as a prison of discourse, where the death of the subjectivity is doomed. The analysis of the ruling secret in the totalitarian government is still significant in understanding the international situation today. Conclusion : From the above—mentioned analysis, we can conclude that the novel is a typical composite text with realistic and post—modernistic elements interwoven in it .
