The Changsha Rice Market was formed under particular historical conditions. Its history can be traced back to the Song dynasty, it developed in Ming and came into existence in Qing dynasty and bloomed in Republic of China (from the year 1912-1949). With the increasing export of rice, Changsha's role in China's rice trade is becoming more and more prominent. During the 1920s -1930s, it has joined the rank of the four popularly-known large rice markets of China, as famous as the other three markets: Wuxi, Wuhu, Jiujiang.This thesis can be divided into three parts:Part One, the historical causes of the blooming of Changsha Rice Market in recent periods. The important part recent Hunan province plays in rice production and its large amount of annual rice export is the basis of the formation of Changsha Rice Market. The economic advantages of recent Changsha over other cities of Hunan Province in aspects like transportation , finance, population, communication and so on, together with its political privilege as local administrative centre, are significant conditions of the formation of the recent Market.Part Two, a concise review of the evolutionary trace of the recent Market. The Market experienced two developing phases: in the late Qing dynasty and in the Republic of China. In the early periods, Changsha was not the main rice market of Hunan province, only possessing some domestic-oriented retail-sale markets. With the transition of trade route, especially the independent opening seaport in 1904, the Rice Market developed by leaps and bounds, its quota of export increasing year by year. By the end of the Qing dynasty, it has more or less completed its transition to a export-oriented sale market. After the establishment of Republic of China, the market grew rapidly, relatively definite division of trade work was made, the scope of export business widened and the centralizing function became more and more prominent.
