The Translator's Aesthetic Process In Literary Translation

The translator's aesthetic process in literary translation is a topic which is well worth our research. But so far there have been few achievements in this field. By applying the knowledge of other subjects such as aesthetics and psychology to this research, the thesis aims to unveil some rules and characteristics of this process.The thesis is divided into four chapters .After reviewing the studies in this field, the first chapter puts forward the model of aesthetic process which is made up of three subprocesses: the subprocess of aesthetic cognition, the subprocess of aesthetic integration as well as the subprocess of reproduction. The second chapter is to study the subprocess of aesthetic cognition in which the translator gets to know the aesthetic information of the original. By making use of the theory put forward by Tong Qingbing, this chapter points out the main tasks the translator faces in this subprocess. The following questions are also taken into consideration: the basic process of the translator's aesthetic cognition as well as the characteristics of this subprocess. The third chapter is to study the subprocess of aesthetic integration in which the translator integrates and polishes the aesthetic information gotten in the former subprocess. This subprocess acts as a bridge in the whole aesthetic process. This chapter illustrates the possibility of its existence as well as its relationship with the other two subprocesses. The fourth chapter is to study the subprocess of aesthetic reproduction in which the translator tries to convey the beauty of the original to the readers. This chapter mainly studies the following questions: the three factors which have an effect on this subprocess, the basic process of aesthetic reproduction as well as the characteristics of this subprocess. Moreover, this chapter gives a special attention to the topic dealing with the "limits" the translator's creation.The conclusion points out the contribution of aesthetic process study to literary translation practice, translation studies, and so on. On the other hand, it also points out the shortcomings of the thesis.
