The naturalism, photography, optics study result of Europe in 19th century and Japanese art have exerted great influence on European painting. What leads to a great innovation of Western art at the end of 19th century and is considered as the most innovative movement since renaissance in the history of European art is the appearance of Impressionism. The Impressionism overthrows the sociological function of traditional art, and separates painting from religion, politics and literature, it no longer represents the subject itself while stressing the visual impression of the physical object. According to the light zone color of sunlight, the impressionists formulate the principle of color presentation, forming the color system of Impressionism painting and giving prominence to the light and color, therefore it frees color from the physical object and the light and shade, through the transference and re-construction of color, it gradually transforms inner feeling of objective color into subjective color. They employ nature as the medium of subjective feeling and reduce the form and structure and the relationship between the light and shade. Impressionism seeks to plane molding-making and uses incomplete fragment composition, representing the transient impression and objective feeling of the object. The Impressionism painters pursue improvisational painting from life of and give up producing many times of classicism, and through the overlapping of opaque and transparent color on the white foundation they directly paint the color they feel. Even they paint directly on canvas with the pure light similar to sunlight spectrum without harmonizing color, only to trying the spatial mixture visually. From different visions the author compares the Impressionism painting with Western traditional painting, and demonstrates the transformation and innovation of impressionism in painting subject, representing forms, aesthetic pursuit and techniques, hence studies thoroughly the ultimate significance of the Impressionism on traditional art and the modern evolution thread of Western art, through which the author seeks the innate law when Western traditional painting makes a historical turning and epoch transition.
