In the whole developmental process of human history, culture all along plays an important role. With the development of network and virtual technology, great changes, which affect the existent and the developmental direction of the culture, have taken place in cognitive media and cognitive ways. The old culture has been greatly impacted, and at the same time the new culture form called Cyberculture has appeared in the cultural stage all over the world.Cyberculture is the produce of the computer, network communication and virtual technology, which penetrated into each ways of social life. And it is also the combination of technology and culture. In the meanwhile, just like other culture forms, it is mutative all the time and more active and changeable since it can integrate some new technology with human's life or enterprise in time. All these characteristics of Cyberculture make it very difficult for us to research on it, especially on its characteristics of betimes and thorough.Currently most of research was focused on 'virtual commtotality', 'the identify recognition on line', 'language research in the space', 'online visit' and 'digital design' etc.. Based on the situation that there is no conclusion widely accepted on the essence of Cyberculture and the research on it only has alittle stride, we adequately consider the relative theories and results of the research of all the countries in the world and find the commonness and difference between them to analyze the essence of Cyberculture in this paper. Considering the complexity of the culture, we established in the axiology connect the theory and experience method to research on the essence of Cyberculture in different ways. With the rise of Cyberculture as the background, the combination of network and virtual technology that have a deep effect on it is claimed. This paper describes that Cyberculture has disjoined the cultural universality and totality character which have been coexisting since the letter was invented. This character can be represented from its trend without any centralized, separation from subjects and objects, the application of HTML and the naissance of network language et al.. Firstly, compared with the totality of traditional culture, the conception of time in Cyberculture is neglected. Secondly, Cyberculture breaks the mode "benefit of part is decided by it of all" in traditional culture. Finally, "center" in traditional culture is weakened. Cyberculture derives virtual, open, alternate, and nonstandard characters from universality character of traditional culture. Generally, the conclusion is that the essence of Cyberculture is "universality without totality".Compared with the traditional culture, Cyberculture is further depicted in this paper. Sharing information as the premise, it has become global. While by the character without any centralized, its multi is ensured simultaneously. Especially the pervasion of the multimedia and HTML technology has endowed customers with more initiative and more freedom to attaininformation and participate directly in the process of culture production. Therefore Cyberculture is of compatibility of virtuality culture and reality culture, totality of cultural individuality and globality, and combination of single- and multi-culture. Unlike the traditional culture, it is from the real to virtual, from close to open, from unilateral to mutual-actional. So it affects greatly the development of human culture.Cyberculture has changed not only the methods by which humans being obtain information but the ways by which human have a self-recognition and reconstruct the world. All of these provide human with a new life style and a new world-view.Shen Jie (Philosophy of Science & Technology) Supervised by Prof. Zhang Yi...
