Wei Zhuang is an outstanding writer of poetry and iambic verse in the late-Tang-Dynast-and-Five-Dynasties period. Former scholars affirm the achievements of his iambic verse, while few do research on his poetry. It is generally said that Wei Zhuang is a poet who "wallowed in voluptuousness" , "mainly cherished the memory of peaceful and prosperous life in bygone days, or expressed his decadent thoughts of carpe diem in his opera" , and whose poetry style "bordered on frivolity" . The writer of this paper, who thinks that because it mirrors the chaos caused by war and turbulent reality at that time in an extentive and authentic way and voices his solitary and miserable feelings, Wei Zhuang' poetry is a representativeness of the late-Tang-Dynasty verse, does not agree with this kind of statement. Most of his poetry is full of sentimentalization and speaks in a fresh and magnificent manner, so emerges special characteristics of art.In accordance of the documents and materials sufficiently mastered and the research fruits of former scholars, this paper presents a systematic and deep study about the family origin, biography, ideology of Wei Zhuang and the ideological content and artistic quality of his Tang poetry.In general, this paper is divided into four parts.Part One is the Introduction that points out the genesis of the research about Wei Zhuang and the achievements of this paper.Part Two is a biographical research on Wei Zhuang. Outlining the general deeds of Wei Zhuang' life, the writer identifies and corrects the family origin and the birth age of Wei Zhuang, his roam about the regions south of the Yangtze River in his early years, and his reception of the emperor in Chencang, which are still in dispute in the academic circles at present.Part Three puts in order the circulation of Huanhua Collection written by Wei Zhuang at first, then discusses the ideological content of Wei Zhuang' s Tang poetry in the aspects of the value of the works inspired by the grief-skricken moods at the sight of the turbulence, the realizability of the odes to history, and the affection of his travel Tang poetry.Part Four, which relates the literature assertion of Wei Zhuang to the discussion, analyses the fresh and magnificent artistic quality of his Tang poetry in the aspects of poetry style and aesthetic characteristics.
