This thesis states that the Chinese classical characteristic theory formed by the study of specific literary character does not present theoretically the proper understanding of the uniqueness, complexity and variety of characteristics. On the contrary, it leads to the formulization and typification of characteristic theory under the influence and invention of ethic. However, in the process of the transmission and localization of the western typical theory in China in the 20th century, people magnify wlfully its practicability and instrumentality so as to fit the need of Chinese reformation, which keeps the theory away from the noumenal study of literature and gives priority to the mechanical and sloganistic theory. Thus, the theory becomes simplified and complanation due to the lack of profound theory and finally becomes stuffy under the influence of typicalization. The reflection on type in the new phase represents people's strong desire to free the typical theory from politics. Therefore, the stress of research is laid on the 17 years' reflection after the foundation of PRC in stead of setting the reconstruction of Chinese characteristic theory as the basic starting point of correcting the mistakes in the typical theory over the 17 years. Moreover, it can not find out the resources for the construction of the theory in the developmental course of the Chinese characteristic theory. This leads the present theory to the edge of criticism.By analyzing the changes of Chinese typical characteristic theory and the problems in it, this thesis attempts to treat the proposition - the characteristic theory objectively and shows the value and significance of studying it. The topic will be discussed in three chapters. Chapter 1: a retrospect of Chinese classical characteristic theory. Chapter 2: Between the tradition and modernity: a tentative research on Chinese typical characteristic theory in the 20th century. Chapter 3: the current characteristic theory lingering on the edge of criticism. Through the 3 chapters' discussion, the thesis tries to depict accurately the general picture and characteristics of Chinese characteristic theory in each period and figures out the problems in it so as to probe deeply into the reasons for the problems and their influence on the subsequent theories. Finally, the thesis tries to give an overview of the development of the theory and elaborates the significance of studying it by looking at the current discourse.
