Study On Letter Words In Chinese

This thesis makes efforts to study letter words in Chinese. Letter words in Chinese are the words that contain one or more letters, mainly Latin letters. Pinyin letters can also be used in letter words. Since the Reform and Opening-up policy has been implemented, more and more letter words from western languages have been pouring into Chinese. At the same time, Chinese itself also produced some local letter words. Chinese people use letter words to express themselves and communicate with each other more often than ever. Letter words have become one indispensable part of Chinese vocabulary, appealing close attention from academic circle as well as common people.The thesis, based on other scholars' previous researches and works, undertakes a comprehensive study on letter words. Chapter One is the introduction which makes a brief account of present academic study on letter words and its achievements, the significance, the purpose and the contents of this thesis. Chapter Two focuses on two pairs of concepts after an analysis of opinions on the definition of letter words in academic cycle. Chapter Three probes the classification of letter words from point of formation, origin, number and popularity, hence observing letter words in groups. Chapter Four analyzes the linguistic features of letter words from spelling, grammar and semantics. It emphasizes the linguistic advantages of letter words and the assimilation. Chapter Five studies the cultural features of letter words from the angle of cross-cultural communication under the Globalization, proving that letter words are a linguistic product of cross-cultural communication under the Globalization are fashionable. Chapter Six investigates the relationship between letter words and Chinese from the impact, the reasons for existence and the role of letter words. Socially, the rapid development of science and technology and the deepening of the Globalization make an external force to put letter words into Chinese. Linguistically, the inner development of Chinese makes an internal force to absorb letter words. The borrowing of letter words satisfies the development of Chinese under an age ofglobalization. It is a historic choice. The absorption of letter words is significant to Chinese linguistically and culturally. Chapter Seven studies the regulation of letter words. The necessity and practicality of official regulation are stated at first. Then the author proposes that a dialectical attitude and a point of development should be developed. The first important thing is that the government, together with the academic cycle, works out official stipulation to regulate and promote the use of letter words in Chinese. The list of officially-used letter words is one important part of the regulation and the listed words should be included in Chinese dictionaries. The list of officially-used letter words and dictionaries are good tools of regulation. After that, the regulation of spelling and pronunciation are stated in brief. In Conclusion, the point of development is deepened.
