Competence in language use is determined not only by the ability to use language with grammatical accuracy, but also to use language appropriate to particular content from a sociolinguistic perspective. Thus, successful language learning requires language users to know the culture that underlies language. However, in the process of FLT, little emphasis has been placed on the development of the learners' intercultural awareness and intercultural communicative (ICC) competence. As a result, although the students have received years of formal English education and have good grades in school, they frequently remain deficient in the ability to actually use English. Enlighted by the above-mentioned belief and current problems. The thesis endeavors to explore culture teaching in FLT, concerns especially the fundamental theories, concepts that are at the study center of intercultural communication, and the pedagogical techniques aims at improving the intercultural communication competence.By exploring the inseparable relationship between culture teaching and language teaching. The thesis attempts to capture the chain of the relationship of culture and language → ICC competence improving → culture teaching. The discussion shows that culture teaching is a complex pedagogical process in which learners' development, psychology and culture's general characteristics, among many other factors, come into play. To cater for the demands of such a variety of factors, culture teaching must go through at least two stages: one is pragmatic-communicative oriented stage, and the other is ideological-understanding oriented stage. The research of value dimension of culture such as individualism-collectivism, high-low context, masculinity-femininity, power distance, uncertainty avoidance and value orientation serve as the core of ideological culture teaching.Taken improvement of ICC competence as the pedagogical target, on the basis of the above research, the thesis also explores the culture classroom teaching methodology and techniques.
